BORDADO
Backstrap looms are emblems of early weaving, when textiles were only as wide as the weaver’s reach. Selvages were stitched together to make broader cloths, and embroidery decorated borders and seams. Bordado draws on the tropes of traditional weaving in a new way; the striated weave is embellished with stitches in a polychrome embroidered stripe. Named for the Spanish translation of ‘embroidery,’ Bordado explores both the practical and ornamental aspects of stitching.
