Kiyohime, the shape-shifting character of Japanese Noh dramas, is often depicted wearing a kimono bearing this pattern; she is caught between human and dragon form, the triangular shapes representing “scales” like that of a fish or snake. The phrase me kara uroko ga ochiru, describes a shift in understanding, or the “scales falling from one’s eyes.” Uroko is revelatory too in this way. While its triangular shapes seem simple at first, they quiver aqueously as the fabric shifts, asking the viewer to question what they may become.
